Position Overview

The University of Kansas Libraries seeks an Undergraduate Engagement Librarian to join the faculty. The successful candidate will report to the Head of the Center for Undergraduate Initiatives and Engagement and will focus on building connections and developing programs that position the libraries as a partner in undergraduate student success.

This position will support and implement strategic library programming, develop teaching materials, and provide information literacy instruction for a diverse undergraduate student population. Specifically, this position will create and provide scaffolded information literacy instruction and creative programming in order to establish scalable resources that support campus-wide student success initiatives, and perform regular assessment of these efforts. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues in the libraries and across campus to enhance undergraduate student engagement from the first-year through graduation. The successful candidate will use an equity lens to generate ideas regarding undergraduate services and the libraries’ role in student success.

The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian is a key contributor to advancing the libraries’ goals to create experiences that help students thrive in the classroom and beyond, and contribute to student success and retention efforts by enhancing and promoting our services, resources, and spaces. This position works closely with colleagues in the libraries’ Research Engagement Division to accomplish shared goals, and works to strategically address the libraries’ priorities. The successful candidate will engage and support all undergraduate students, and actively contribute to the advancement of undergraduate initiatives at the University of Kansas.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. Rank considerations are based on professional performance, research, and service experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian.

Job Description

Work Schedule – Monday- Friday, 8 am – 5 pm

This position has the option of a hybrid work arrangement. Incumbent may work remotely and on campus based on a set departmental schedule

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 70%

  • Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with campus partners in support of undergraduate teaching and learning, student engagement, and student retention.
  • Collaborate internally with library colleagues, as well as externally with campus partners to coordinate information literacy integration into the undergraduate experience.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and other librarians to design and deliver library instruction to students
  • Measure student learning outcomes, and assess library programming in support of student success.
  • Respond to instructional and research needs across disciplines as part of the Research & Learning team.
  • Incorporate current and emerging instructional practices, methodologies, and technologies into library instruction programming.
  • Contribute to the library’s presence at campus orientations and new student events.
  • Develop engaging programming for undergraduate students that grow information literacy skills and promote library services, spaces, and resources.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of project teams and other groups to advance the libraries’ strategic priorities.
  • Actively communicate issues implicit in scholarly communication and open access in discussions with colleagues and with the KU community. Attend training and events designed and developed to promote understanding of trends and best practices in scholarly communications. Reflect this understanding in their work as a librarian at KU.
  • Actively participate in, and advocate for, the educational role of the Libraries through dynamic engagement in campus teaching and research, campus collaborations, or staff development and training. Identify and make use of teaching opportunities in any circumstance, promote the Libraries instructional resources and support, and obtain instructional expertise from colleagues as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity efforts in the Libraries and contribute to an inclusive environment.
  • Participate in and contribute to strategic professional growth and training.
  • May supervise 1-2 student assistants.

RESEARCH 20%

  • Contributes to the profession’s collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity.
  • Research may involve the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry, or editorial work (see Promotion and Tenure Procedures at KU, Spring 2017).

SERVICE 10%

  • Engages in service to the Libraries, the University and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent from a foreign institution by time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience delivering information literacy instruction and/or library programming that supports student learning, success, and equity.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogical strategies that enhance student learning.
  • Familiarity with the practice of critical library pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues faced by non-traditional, first-generation, underrepresented populations, and international students, as evidenced by application materials, prior experience, or coursework.
  • Evidence of building and sustaining relationships with faculty, staff, and students to advance student success initiatives.
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques employed in libraries.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by the candidate’s application materials, other examples of written work and/or publications, and public speaking/presentation experience.
