Rhode Island Energy is seeking a Technical Training Specialist in our gas Customer Metering Services department to design, develop and deliver high quality learning experiences that meet the technical, regulatory and safety requirements of our gas business.


  • Deliver technical training programs to gas clients through a blended learning approach (theory & practical), including Annual Expert Training (AET), Operator Qualification reviews and gas progression schools.
  • Aligning courses to meet NGA Operator Qualifications.
  • Utilize Operator Qualification Aging reports to ensure that employees receive appropriate and relevant training.
  • Exhibit willingness to learn and teach new program curriculum and adapt to needs of the department.
  • Conduct training on gas equipment, (theory and hands-on practical), demonstrate company approved methods of gas installations to field personnel.
  • Liaise with the gas client and develop strong relationships with yard coordinators, schedulers, and supervisors as a trusted training partner
  • Conduct assessments of training needs associated with the introduction of procedures and technology to ensure best practices into learning methods and programs (Example Electronic Pre-assessments, knowledge checks)
  • Support the design and development of cohesive and innovative curriculum and training programs for gas clients. Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (Example E-learning modules )
  • Work in conjunction with Pipeline Safety Management to ensure that all students are well prepared to be tested for Operator Qualifications in a timely manner.
  • Maintain training records for all employees.


  • 3-6 years of gas operations experience
  • Technical training experience in the gas industry
  • Solid understanding of gas regulation & procedures such as Federal DOT 192 CFR, Massachusetts 220 CMR, Pipe Joining procedures (PJQ)
  • Working knowledge of gas related equipment such as meters, headers, CGI, fittings, regulator stations, valves, McElroy fusion machine etc.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems & applications, including Microsoft Office & Learning Management Systems
  • Ability to use an iPad, laptop, and various presentation equipment
  • Must be able to work emergency assignments as required by company
  • Driver’s license is required
  • Experience creating & implementing a utility training curriculum, including developing appropriate testing, is preferred
  • Experience managing a union workforce is preferred
