Job Description :


As a Senior Telecommunications Specialist (STS) you will operate as a journeyman level technician that provides 24×7 maintenance, installation, and support of the WSP public safety communication systems which consist of both digital and analog microwave radio systems, land mobile radio base stations and repeaters, voting systems, communications consoles, and various other infrastructure equipment.

Additionally, you will provide maintenance, installation, and support of mobile and portable two-way radios, speed measuring devices (SMD), telecommunications devices such as VoIP telephones, and various other agency electronic equipment support needs. You may be assigned to perform system-level administration and monitoring of complex networked radio and data systems and equipment.


Travel statewide is required for agency and division functions, training, WSP infrastructure support and project support and this may result in overnight stays. Potential travel on unimproved roads or off-road driving which would involve 4×4, ATV, and Tracked snow vehicles.

Tools and Equipment:

Position is issued a cellular phone and email device and is expected to monitor it Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and periodically when off duty and respond to notices and/or calls within two hours. You must provide your own basic hand tools; however, specialty tools and test equipment will be provided by the agency.

The Electronic Services Division provides statewide public safety telecommunications, land mobile radio, microwave, and engineering services to the WSP, its partner agencies, and customers.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform semi-annual and/or annual preventative maintenance and repairs on live microwave radio system equipment, land mobile radio infrastructure equipment, dispatch consoles, telecommunications equipment, speed-measuring devices, and data network equipment per division preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Perform monthly inspections of assigned communications sites and ensure these sites are kept in a clean, safe, and fully functional condition.
  • Installation, programming, and repairs for WSP and contracted outside agencies.
  • Respond to Emergency Communication System service outages and restore services in a timely manner.

Additional Duties:

  • Update and maintains inventory systems and necessary databases.
  • Orders and stocks repair parts, assemblies, and spare equipment.
  • Provide support for projects and large scale developments by preparing equipment for installation or issue.


Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Two years of formal education or training in electronics
  • Five years of paid experience in maintenance and repair of at least one of the following:
    • Two-way radio systems and equipment
    • Digital and analog microwave carrier systems
    • Wireless and wired data network systems
  • Experience and understanding of computer based applications
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer networks, wiring standards and protocols.

Desired Qualifications:

  • General Radiotelephone Operator License issued by the Federal Communications Commission, technical certification by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) or similar professional certifications.
  • Strong background in land mobile radio trunking technologies and P25 digital communications.
  • Strong background in analog and digital carrier grade microwave systems
  • Strong background in IP/MPLS technology and systems
  • Good understanding of Internet Protocol based technology systems and technology
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer networks, wiring standards, and protocols
  • Technical writing ability and good communications skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
