Job Description :

We are looking for an experienced and highly self-motivated Principal Optical Engineer for our growing team. The primary responsibility for this position is to act as a technical leader, partnering with a project manager on multiple product development projects. You will interface directly with customers, present technical reports, participate in proposal development, guide and direct other engineers, and develop lens and optical system designs.

This position is full-time (hybrid), based in our Portland, Maine office.


  • Drive optical system engineering development.
  • Lead multi-functional teams in the Tech Lead role, including Optical, Electrical, Mechanical, and Software Engineering to deliver state-of-the-art solutions.
  • Define project plan and schedule, own project execution.
  • Deliver executive communication/presentations and drive the decision-making process.
  • Ensure tight team coordination and communication. Manage development budgets and engineering builds.
  • Effectively and consistently communicate overall project status. Identify and resolve conflicts, interdependencies, and project issues quickly and efficiently.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5 years + of experience designing and developing optical systems
  • Experience with designing for manufacturing and delivering products to market
  • Experience with lens design, including sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, tolerance analysis and stray-light modeling (Zemax, Light-tools, or CodeV)
  • Systems engineering experience, including interfacing with electronical and software engineers
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic with proven creative and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, balancing multiple high-priority objectives
  • Comfortable working in a small team environment, where multiple job roles may be required
  • Ability to filter and distill relevant information for the right audience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5 years + of experience designing and developing imaging and camera systems for medical devices
  • 5 years + lens design experience, including sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, tolerance analysis and stray-light modeling (Zemax, Light-tools, or CodeV)
  • Competent with building optical setups in the lab, using metrology equipment and automating data acquisition platforms.
  • Software experience in Python, Matlab, or C, C++

Education & Experience:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, EE, Applied Physics or equivalent.
  • 5+ years after Ph.D. or 10+ years after MS industry experience in related fields

Pay: $125,000.00 – $150,000.00 per year
