Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of the Laboratory Manager or designee, the Medical Laboratory Technician routinely performs moderate to complex medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This position works within defined guidelines ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, laboratory safety standards and established quality assurance/control practices.

Duties/Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Test biological specimens to gather information about patient conditions, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or other problems and enter findings into computer
  • Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices
  • Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment
  • Prepare standard volumetric solutions or reagents to be combined with samples, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures
  • Collect biological specimen samples from patients, observing principles and procedures for the proper collection, storage, treatment, and transport of collected samples
  • Labels and processes patient specimens accurately & distributes to appropriate areas of the laboratory
  • Dispatches specimens to the main lab or other designated testing facility as per established procedure
  • Ensures all tests on requisitions are accounted for in the ordering system
  • Maintains positive patient identification for all specimens collected, using defined protocols
  • Maintains patient confidentiality throughout all activities and communications
  • Keeps the work area decontaminated with proper cleaning solutions and disposes of waste & trash in appropriate containers
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory services
  • Knowledge of organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Demonstrated ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems
  • Familiar with HIPAA and Patient Heath Information privacy laws and regulations
  • Familiar with and abides by safety regulations for moderate to complex clinical laboratory settings
  • Highly organized with proven ability to prioritize workload, and meet deadlines
  • Strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
  • Completes work assignments accurately and in a timely manner
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Handles difficult situations involving clients, patients, and co-workers in a professional manner
  • Familiarity with the PC and proficient in Microsoft Office tools as well as with Lab Information Systems (LIS)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or closely related field; or Associates degree from accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program & passed qualifying exam; or the Passing of qualifying exam and complete advanced Military MT course of 50 weeks and prior experience in a Medical Technician Specialist position within 5 years prior to applying
  • COVID-19 lab experience preferred
  • CPR Certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Nonstrenuous – Primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, and carrying of light objects

Work Environment:

  • Moderate Risk – regular work within clinical setting where adherence to special safety regulations and precautions is required

Job Types: Per diem, Temporary

Pay: $25.00 – $32.00 per hour
